If a spouse is having problems financially in Austin while caring for a loved one living with Alzheimer’s, he or she may not be able to provide the necessary care for their loved one. Though they may be reluctant to accept financial donations, you must ensure that your loved one with Alzheimer’s is fully taken care of.

Speak to doctors and offer to pay for doctor’s visits and prescriptions up front so that when a spouse goes to get them, they need not pay themselves. Several arrangements can be worked out so that this is done in private and a spouse can be told that his or her insurance covers the cost.

The key to keeping a spouse happy is to let them know they are independent and that the things you’re doing aren’t “help” but ways for you to keep in touch with your family. Instead of cooking meals for your loved ones, make it seem as though you’re there to eat with them and have the spouse help out. It’s important that he or she feels like a contributing member of the family, as they are, so that they don’t become depressed or ashamed of all the help they are receiving.

The spouse of an Alzheimer’s patient is often overlooked, but they tend to need as much care as attention as their significant other. To ensure dignity and the highest quality of life, respect their opinions, freedom and independence. They are most likely going through a hard enough time with their loved one being ill without feeling as though they’ve lost control over their own lives.

Austin Elder Law Attorney – Austin Home Care For Your Loved One Living with Alzheimer’s in Austin, Texas - Call Brian Willie at Willie Elder Law – (512) 478-0834, or email bwillie@WillieElderLaw.com.

Respecting The Spouse Of A Loved One With Alzheimer’s –

One of the most difficult aspects of caring for a loved one in Austin with Alzheimer’s is caring for their spouse as well. Though they may not be ill like their husband or wife, the spouse is most likely older and unable to care for his or her loved one as much as needed.

Problems often arise when a spouse is overcome with annoyance that his or her freedom has been compromised by those caring for their loved one. It’s important to respect a spouse’s privacy and requests while maintaining a healthy, caring relationship with an Alzheimer’s patient in Austin.

Many spouses will not see a need for assistance and insist that they can take care of their wife or husband by themselves. This is incredibly difficult, though, and is a lot of responsibility for someone who is already elderly and possibly facing their own physical ailments. Even if they can cover several areas of the necessary care, it’s unlikely they can manage by themselves, so you need to be sure you’re there to offer assistance.

Freedom and independence is a huge issue for spouses of Alzheimer’s patients so having their own living quarters would be ideal. If they live with you in your home, make sure they have their own bedroom, bathroom, living room area and even kitchen to ensure that the spouse does not feel suffocated.

Though you cannot be around at all times, hidden baby monitors can be turned on to make sure your loved ones are safe. Often times, when an Alzheimer’s patient needs the most care, their spouse is much older and has their own problems as well. It’s important to keep a watch on the both of them.

The key to responding to your loved ones paranoid behavior is patience and understanding. Though it’s easy to become offended by their suspicions, keep in mind that it’s not personal and they’re probably just as confused and hurt as you are.

Listen carefully to what their saying and try to understand their reality. Don’t argue or try to convince them that they’re wrong, just let them know that you care about what they’re feeling and are very sorry that they’re feeling that way. Let your loved one express their ideas and acknowledge their opinions before offering a simple answer. Keep your response short and easy to understand.

To take their mind off of their suspicions, suggest another activity and focus on keeping them occupied. Ask them for help with a chore, play a game you know they’ll enjoy or make a meal together. To avoid their suspicions in the future, buy your loved one two of each item they value and often lose.

For instance, if they tend to lose their handbag or wallet, buy two that are exactly the same so that they won’t be suspicious that you stole it. Paranoia and suspicion will often pass, but it’s important to keep your cool and remain understanding. The more worked up your loved one gets the more paranoid they become.

Caring For An Alzheimer’s Patient Experiencing Paranoia & Suspicion –

The paranoia and suspicion of a person with Alzheimer’s can be one of the most difficult behaviors for their caregiver to handle. As the Alzheimer’s develops and targets your loved ones memory, they’ll gradually become more confused and perceive things they would have once though normal, in new ways.

It is not only their inability to not remember certain people, places and things that causes paranoia, but also the fact that they can’t remember themselves as well. This combination can create a frightening environment for your loved one and they’re bound to grow paranoid and suspicions of seemingly regular activity.

People with Alzheimer’s will often confront their loved ones, accusing them of theft, improper behavior or even infidelity. Many times they’re getting their feelings from ones they’ve had in the past from different people or different times. It’s also possible that they’re misinterpreting what he or she is hearing or seeing.

Because Alzheimer’s patients confuse times, events and people, they may associate an event with the wrong person. For instance, if their ex-husband or wife once cheated on them, they may accuse their new spouse of doing the same.

Austin Elder Law Attorney – Austin Residential & Hospice Care For Your Loved One living in Austin, Texas - Call Brian Willie at Willie Elder Law – (512) 478-0834, or email bwillie@WillieElderLaw.com.

It’s important that your loved one living in Austin receive one-on-one attention and proper, experienced care so they maintain a high quality of life. Find out what kind of activities or special programs a facility offers for people with Alzheimer’s and speak with the family members of other patients in the residence to find out their opinions on the professional care.

The move from their home to a residence or hospice in Austin can be incredibly hard on an individual with Alzheimer’s, so it’s important to make their new home as comfortable as possible. Bring items from home to comfort your loved one and make their room more familiar. Encourage family members to visit and try to set up a schedule so that your loved one gets at least one visitor a day. Since it may be difficult to communicate, visit your loved one during mealtimes or plan an activity that you can do together.

Though you may not be able to care for your loved one 24-hours a day, it’s important to remember that, just because they are in a professional facility, they still need the love and attention of close friends and family. Alzheimer’s patients in Austin often have a fear of being abandoned so be sure to explain to them that you are not leaving them and will come to their side if needed.

Reiterate that they are not a burden, but that you just want to make sure they’re getting the best care possible, and that the staff in their facility can do that better than you. The transition takes time but may be better in the long run, for both you and your loved one.

Austin Elder Law Attorney – Austin Residential & Hospice Care For Your Loved One living in Austin, Texas - Call Brian Willie at Willie Elder Law – (512) 478-0834, or email bwillie@WillieElderLaw.com.

There may come a point when you are unable to continue providing care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. Though it’s important that an Alzheimer’s patient remain in his or her own home environment for as long as possible, you may not be able to properly care for them due to aggressive behavior, a need for constant medical attention or an obligation to your children. This is particularly true if your loved one is experiencing late-stage Alzheimer’s, which often requires the 24-hour assistance that only nursing homes and hospice care can provide.

Before you move your loved one to a residence or hospice, make sure you research the options in Austin, Texas. It’s important that they stay close to home to allow visitors and you want to be sure the environment in the residence or hospice is appropriate. Ask about daily care and how many other residents there are in the facility.

A doctor may notice that, along with a depressed mood and decreased pleasure in their usual activities, an Alzheimer’s patient experiencing depression may be agitated and have recurrent thoughts of death or suicide. They may have a loss of appetite or be unable to sleep and feel fatigued, hopeless or excessively guilty for no reason.

The treatment process for a person with Alzheimer’s also suffering from depression includes both medical and moral support. In combination with one of several different antidepressants, Alzheimer’s patients experiencing depression require predictable routines, in order to cope more comfortably with the effects Alzheimer’s is having on their day-to-day activities.

You should take the time to reassure your loved one that they will not be abandoned and are causing no burden on you or your family. Schedule different activities that you know they will enjoy and find ways in which your loved one can contribute to family activities and recognize his or her contributions. Above all, Alzheimer’s patients suffering from depression need reassurance and support from a dedicated caretaker whose first concern is the comfort of their loved one.

Caring For A Loved Suffering From Alzheimer’s And Depression –

It’s estimated that almost forty percent of people with Alzheimer’s also suffer from depression, most often as a result of their confusion, anxiety and sense of dependency on others. To improve your loved ones quality of life, self-esteem and individual functions, it’s essential that you seek treatment for their depression as soon as they show symptoms.

Identifying depression in an Alzheimer’s patient can be incredibly difficult because dementia often causes several signs that are also associated with depression, such as: apathy, social withdrawal, isolation and loss of interest in activities.

It’s hard to determine where a loved ones Alzheimer’s symptoms end and their depression begins and, since there is no real test to detect depression, caregivers are often unable to tell that their loved one is depressed.

A medical evaluation is necessary in diagnosing depression in a person with Alzheimer’s and it may be helpful to consult not only with your loved ones primary care physician, but with a geriatric psychiatrist as well.

Elder Law Help in Austin for Alzheimer’s Care - brought to you as a service of The Willie Elder Law Firm, Brian T. Willie, J.D., we are located at 3755 Capital of Texas Highway, Suite 295 • Austin, TX 78704 • (512) 478-0834 (By Appointment Only).
If your loved one is not obeying traffic signals, driving an inappropriate speeds, hitting curbs, confusing the brake and gas pedals or swerving back and forth between lanes, they are a danger not only to themselves, but to others on the road and should not continue to drive.

It’s likely that your loved one will become angry and upset when you approach them about not continuing to drive. They’ll feel as though their independence and dignity is being taken away and will be reluctant to rely on others for transportation. It’s essential that you remain sensitive but firm, hearing your loved one out but insisting that they no longer operate an automobile.

In some cases, you’ll discover that your loved one is continuing to drive even though they promised they would not. To prevent them from injury themselves or others, there are several ways in which you can limit their driving.

First of all, speak to your loved ones doctor and ask them to write a “do not drive” prescription and send it to the Department of Motor Vehicles and show it to your loved one. Control access to their car by holding on to their keys, parking it on another block or in the driveway of someone you know.

If your loved one continues to drive, despite the fact that they no longer have a legal license, you may need to disable the vehicle by removing the battery or distributor cap.

Taking away the driving privileges of an Alzheimer’s patient is an exhausting process that could leave your loved one feeling like they’ve lost their freedom and family members feeling guilty for taking that freedom away. It’s important to be sensitive to your loved ones needs and arrange for other modes of transportation so they can continue to go about their daily routines.

Above all, Alzheimer’s patients tend to mourn for their independence and feel useless relying on others to do the things that they used to do for themselves. Maintaining a relatively normal schedule can offer stability and a strong sense of self-satisfaction, for both you and your loved one.

How To Know When A Loved One With Alzheimer’s Should Stop Driving –

Driving requires good judgment, quick reaction times and split-second decision making, all qualities that are affected by Alzheimer’s. Families often struggle with the decision to limit or stop the driving of a loved one suffering from the illness, but the reality is that, for a person with Alzheimer’s, driving becomes difficult and unsafe.

Though an Alzheimer’s diagnosis is not reason enough to provoke a loved ones driving privileges, there are several warning signs that they may be unfit and unsafe to take to the roads alone. If they’re forgetting how to get to familiar places, such as a family members home or store that they’ve been shopping at for years, it’s possible that they could begin driving aimlessly and wandering through town.

Allowing a loved one to drive in this confused state could leave them lost and in a bad situation they may not be able to get themselves out of.
