Respecting The Spouse Of A Loved One With Alzheimer’s –

One of the most difficult aspects of caring for a loved one in Austin with Alzheimer’s is caring for their spouse as well.  Though they may not be ill like their husband or wife, the spouse is most likely older and unable to care for his or her loved one as much as needed.

Problems often arise when a spouse is overcome with annoyance that his or her freedom has been compromised by those caring for their loved one.  It’s important to respect a spouse’s privacy and requests while maintaining a healthy, caring relationship with an Alzheimer’s patient in Austin.

Many spouses will not see a need for assistance and insist that they can take care of their wife or husband by themselves.  This is incredibly difficult, though, and is a lot of responsibility for someone who is already elderly and possibly facing their own physical ailments.  Even if they can cover several areas of the necessary care, it’s unlikely they can manage by themselves, so you need to be sure you’re there to offer assistance.

Freedom and independence is a huge issue for spouses of Alzheimer’s patients so having their own living quarters would be ideal.  If they live with you in your home, make sure they have their own bedroom, bathroom, living room area and even kitchen to ensure that the spouse does not feel suffocated.

Though you cannot be around at all times, hidden baby monitors can be turned on to make sure your loved ones are safe.  Often times, when an Alzheimer’s patient needs the most care, their spouse is much older and has their own problems as well.  It’s important to keep a watch on the both of them.
