WHAT OTHER ESTATE PLANNING DOCUMENTS SHOULD I HAVE?

Continuing our blog from September 3..

While costs certainly vary from lawyer to lawyer, most good lawyers will charge a flat rate for preparing all of the documents involved. This means that you know from the outset, exactly what it will cost and there will be no surprises in the form of hourly fees, copying costs, faxes, phone calls etc.

Remember that you get what you pay for. A properly drafted estate plan, especially one that takes into consideration the potential need for long term care may seem expensive. However, if set up correctly, it can the effect of not only saving you thousands on probate, but may be able to help you preserve thousand or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in assets.

A good lawyer will work with you on fees, allowing you to pay by credit card, or accepting a few post dated checks, to minimize the amount of fees that need to be paid up front.

Regardless of the fee charged, make sure the lawyer clearly puts his or her fee in a written fee agreement, outlining exactly what work will be performed, and how much it will cost.
